The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is Tanzania's oldest and most prestigious public university. It is located 13 kilometres west of the city of Dar es Salaam and occupies 1,625 acres on the observation hill, known in Kiswahili as Mlimani. University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), an affiliated college of the University of London, was founded on October 25, 1961. From its inception until 1964, it was temporarily located in the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) building on Lumumba Street in Dar es Salaam. In 1964, it was moved to its current location on the Hill. At its inception, there was only one faculty, the Faculty of Law, with thirteen students, one of whom was Julie Manning. In 1963, it joined Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya as a constituent colleges of the University of East Africa. Act No. 12 of 1970 established UDSM as a legitimate university on July 1, 1970. Vision 2061 was unveiled by UDSM as a roadmap for its future growth.
